Western Togoland is a territory in West Africa seeking independence from Ghana. The region, formerly British Togoland, became part of Ghana in 1957 following a plebiscite in 1956. The independence movement is led by the Western Togoland Restoration Front (WTRF) and the Homeland Study Group Foundation.
After World War II, British Togoland became a United Nations Trust Territory under British administration. In 1956, 58% of the western Togolese voted to integrate into what would become independent Ghana in 1957. However, independence sentiment has remained strong among the Ewe people who make up most of the movement's support base.
On May 9, 2017, the Homeland Study Group Foundation attempted to declare independence. Western Togoland became a member state of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) in 2017. On September 25, 2020, separatists declared independence from Ghana, marking a significant milestone in their movement for self-determination.
The region primarily encompasses Ghana's Volta Region, with major cities including Ho (capital), Kpandu, and Hohoe. The Ewe ethnic group forms the majority population and provides the main support base for independence.
